Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) is a series of diagnostic tests used to measure how well your lungs are working. These tests help evaluate lung capacity, airflow, and the ability to transfer oxygen into the bloodstream. A full PFT consists of three key tests:
Spirometry – Measures how much air you can inhale and exhale, as well as how quickly you can do so.
Lung Volumes – Assesses the total amount of air your lungs can hold and how much remains after exhaling.
Diffusing Capacity Test – Determines how efficiently oxygen moves from your lungs into your bloodstream.
PFTs are essential for diagnosing and managing various lung conditions, including:
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Asthma
Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), Sarcoidosis, and other lung fibrosis conditions
Restrictive Lung Disease
Lung Cancer
Pulmonary Hypertension
Beyond diagnosing lung diseases, PFTs are valuable in:
Pre-operative assessments to determine surgical candidacy
Monitoring treatment effectiveness and medication response
Evaluating exposure to lung irritants
Measuring disease severity and predicting disease progression
